Higher Education Minister S.B.Dissanayaka has told university students to get closer to the police. Minister Dissanayaka who visited the eastern University on Wednesday met with the university lecturers, students and other staff.
No withdrawal
In a lengthy talk, he said that in no circumstances, the police post set up in the university would be withdrawn.
If continued with further protests police unit will be replaced by army, then by the navy and finally by a Special Task Force Unit. Minister Dissanayaka said.
He said that in all universities in the world there are police units established for the safety of students and university properties.
At a meeting with the student union leaders, they had told the minister that they have no objection for a police unit out side the university.
Fear
The minister told student union leaders that Sinhala students had informed him that they are in fear to study in the university without a police presence.
If the situation will improve, removal of the police post will be considered, the Minister told the student leaders.
The Eastern University was closed temporarily following a clash between students and the Police, BBC reports.
