May Day: UPFA rally in Colombo, UNP in Bandarawela

Political parties and groups in Sri Lanka are currently preparing for May Day celebrations in the country which are being held at various locations under various themes.
The May Day rally of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is to be held at the Colombo Municipal Council grounds under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapakse.
All 16 parties belonging to the UPFA will be on one stage for this year’s May Day ceremony, which will comprise of several processions , Chairman of the UPFA May Day Committee Dullus Alahapperuma stated.
Meanwhile the United National Party (UNP) May Day demonstration and rally is being organized in Bandarawela with the participation of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe.
This year’s May Day rally will be held to win over the rights of the working people, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) demonstration is to begin at S. de S. Jayasinghe ground in Dehiwela while the May Day rally will be held at BRC Ground, Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s Marxist party is holding a procession for the May Day after three years.
In addition it has been reported that several trade unions have also organized numerous May Day processions.
