MADURAI: A public interest petition filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeks a directive to the Union Government to initiate concrete action against the Sri Lankan government and its President Mahinda Rajapaksa based on a report from the United Nations (UN).
In a petition filed by Priyan (29) of Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district before the Bench on Friday, the petitioner said the tribunal in Dublin in Ireland had declared Rajapaksa a war criminal.
The petitioner pointed out that if Sikhs or Muslims of India were attacked in any part of the world, the Union government took immediate action.
But if a Tamil was attacked, it never took notice. The Centre should initiate steps to arraign Rajapaksa before the International Court to face trial for war crimes.
The petitioner has prayed for a directive to the President of India and the Chief Secretary to take action to bring Rajapaksa to book. (Express News Service)
