An opposition Maldivian Parliamentarian Ali Arif and scores of female and youth wing activists were arrested when police in Male broke up a protest demanding the stepping down of President Mohamad Nasheed.
Thousands had reportedly converged on the capital Male late last evening to stage mass protests similar to those in Egypt, Libya etc. to protest against the rising cost of living, alleged government mismanagement and corruption. However by morning today (May 1) police had dispersed the protestors.
President Nasheed was elected President of the Maldives in 2008 ending the rule of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who governed the country of atoll islands for nearly 30 years.
