The UN Expert Panel report is an indictment against the entire nation and not only the government which is only one part of the country, UNP MP Wijedasa Rajapakse stated in an exclusive interview with Ada Derana.
The Parliamentarian explained that the report had detrimental implications to the image of the country as it was a document that was endorsed by the UN Secretary General which holds weight within the international community.
“However much we argue or demonstrated that this report is not in compliance with the United Nations Charter and the existing international law, since that has been released with the authority of the UN Secretary General that there is a greater weight on that report. It can be abused, it can be misused,” he said.
In the UN Human Rights Council special session held in 2009, Sri Lanka managed to gain the support of many nations to help pass a resolution in favour of Sri Lanka, mainly because there wasn’t any credible information or facts of any offenses committed against humanity, he said.
He then claimed that it is possible that with the release of this report, some of those nations may withdraw their support of the country.
He added that he had his doubts on whether Russia and China will continue their support of Sri Lanka as those countries were not complete democracies and that they too would want to abstain from antagonizing countries like the US and other European countries because 60% to 70% of their market lies in the West.
