Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare, Dilan Perera is scheduled to begin an official visit to Qatar tomorrow (May 08) on an invitation extended by the government of the Middle Eastern country.

During his visit the Minister is slated to hold talks with officials regarding employment opportunities in Qatar.

A delegation comprising senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Employment Promotion and the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau and Chief Executive Officers of recruitment agencies in Sri Lanka will be accompanying the minister.

Apart from bilateral meetings with the ministers of Qatar, the Sri Lankan delegation will conduct two meetings to discuss ways and opportunities to increase employment opportunities for Sri Lankan nationals in Qatar.

These meetings will be with a cross section of Sri Lankans living in Qatar and representatives of recruitment agencies and companies in Qatar. A large number of companies and recruiting agencies have been invited to these meeting by the Sri Lankan embassy in Doha, Qatari media reported today.

Earlier in February Minister of External Affairs, Professor G L Peiris during his official visit to Qatar held many bilateral discussions with the Emir and ministers.

As Qatar prepares for the 2022 World Cup, the discussions were held on expertise Sri Lanka has in the construction services sector and about skilled employment opportunities for Sri Lankan employees.

A proposal was also put forward for the Qatari private sector to establish vocational training centres in Sri Lanka that will provide systematic training for jobs here including opportunities in the medical sector for nurses and pharmacists.

There are almost 100,000 Sri Lankan employees now in Qatar in different sectors and in varies positions, The Peninsula reports.
