The CID has commenced investigations into several incidences where two prison inmates using cellular phones had allegedly threatened various individuals and colleted large sums of money as ransom.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that it has decided to call reports on two bank accounts, connected to the incidents of extortion.

Information has been uncovered that the threatening calls had been made by two inmates from the Welikada Prison, the CID states in a report submitted to court.

Additional Magistrate of Colombo, Praharsha Ranasinghe had then ordered the CID to conduct further investigations and present a report.
