844 prisoners released today

The State released 844 prisoners today (May 17) after being granted a Presidential public pardon. The prisoners will be handed over to their families after observing the customs at their respective religious institutions, the Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry stated.

 

Meanwhile, the UNP has requested that Sarath Fonseka be granted freedom during the Vesak celebrations today. Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and UNP National Organizer Ravi Karunanayake visited the former General in prison last evening.
