New Delhi, May 18: Foreign Minister G L Peiris has dispelled the view that China is encircling India.
Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Peiris said: “ There is no encirclement, there is no threat to any other country, India and China are all our friends, and we will not allow one country to launch hostile action against another country that is a universal principle we adopt.
“To use Sri Lankan soil or water as a launching pad that will never happen, there is no question of encirclement,” he added.
He noted that both China and India were carrying out port, airport and road construction for Sri Lanka, apart from being involved in the power and energy sector.
“China is helping us as indeed India so there is no exclusivity in any of this , China is helping us constructing ports and harbors like Hambantota , International airport in deep south India is also very active in those areas, both India and China are involved in construction of our roads,” he added.
He also emphasized that there is no hostility or competition and any reasons for misgivings and suspicions between India and China.
Peiris, during his visit to India, had met with the top Indian leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao to discuss issues relating to the region and the international community. (ANI)
