Amunugama selected to Chair the UN ESCAP Ministerial Segment

Senior Minister of International Monetary Cooperation Dr Sarath Amunugama, was unanimously selected to Chair the Ministerial Segment of the 67th Session of the UN ESCAP Commission now on in Bangkok. Dr Amunugama also chaired today (Tuesday) the High-Level Panel discussion on contemporary economic and financial issues relevant to the Asia-Pacific Region.
According to a release sent by the Embassy in Bangkok, over 60 governmental leaders from the Asia Pacific region have convened in Bangkok, Thailand to discuss the social protection and development agenda for the region. UNESCAP 67thCommission Sessions began on 19th May 2011 and is due to conclude tomorrow.
The 67thCommission session of UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) is held under the theme “Beyond the Crises” – the long term perspectives on social protection and development in Asia and the pacific.
While the Asia Pacific region emerged from the global financial crisis as a growth driver and anchor of stability for the world economy in 2011, high food and fuel prices and volatile capital flows pose fresh challenges. These sessions involving senior governmental decision makers from the region will discuss issues in a bid to seek regional solutions and the way forward.
Earlier Dr Amunugama who led the Sri Lanka delegation to the 67th Commission Sessions delivered the “Country Statement” in which he underlined Sri Lanka’s new economic climate following the military defeat of the LTTE and the integration of the northern and eastern provinces which are now contributing significantly to the country’s GDP growth.
Dr Amunugama was also one of the six participants at the High-Level Panel discussion on global and regional economic issues.
