A Sri Lankan maid committed suicide by jumping out of a fast-moving vehicle traveling from Madinah to Riyadh, a senior official from the Sri Lankan Embassy announced Tuesday.

The 33-year-old woman was identified as Sandya Premni of Moneragala district about 300 km from Colombo. It is unknown on which day the reported suicide took place.

“The incident took place some 150 km from Buraidah on the Madinah-Qassim highway,” a diplomat from the embassy told Arab News. “The maid, seated on the right side of the back seat, opened the rear door and jumped from the vehicle.”

According to embassy records, Premni arrived in the Kingdom in 2009 and had remained with her original sponsor. Her sponsor reportedly said there were no issues with the housemaid and she was doing her work diligently.

The diplomat, who did not want to be identified, said the sponsor — who was also not identified — said the maid had received a call from Sri Lanka and was distressed that her husband back home had taken another woman in the village.

Qassim police investigated and deemed the woman’s death a suicide.

The body is at a hospital in Buraidah. The diplomat said the body would be repatriated on completion of  formalities, Arab News reports.
