The government has continuously rejected bringing the Freedom of Information Act to parliamentary debate, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya stated. The act will strengthen the people’s right to access public information.
Despite the Act being presented to parliament on several occasions the government has continuously raised opposition against debating the matter as it did yesterday (May 25).
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo today (May 26) MP Jayasuriya said that this Act is not meant to topple the government or oppose it but only to safeguard public rights while he added that the people should be made aware of this injustice.
