Three individuals have reportedly drowned in the Mahaweli River today (May 29) in the Katuwanwila area in Welikanda. The deceased, two students and a hostel warden from an Arabic College in Oddamavadi, Batticaloa were amongst a group of 52 students that had set-off on a trip today morning.
The group had stopped off at Katuwanwila, a village in the border of Polonnaruwa, for a picnic and bath on the way to Polonnaruwa on a one-day trip.
Most of the students had been bathing in the river when the two students and the warden in question had been dragged away due to strong currents at around 12 noon, Ada Derana correspondent said.
Welikanda Police are conducting further investigations and are still in search of the bodies.
