UNP MP Jayalath Jayawardena, on behalf of the Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya, vehemently condemned the ‘inhuman’ act committed by the police and the armed forces who ‘mercilessly hammered’ the workers of the Katunayaka Free Trade Zone (FTZ) yesterday (May 30).
The workers who were protesting the Private Sector Pension Bill which has been proposed by the government were met by police and armed forces who fired tear gas into the crowd to subdue the protest.
MP Jayawardena stated that the security forces had entered some of the factories at the FTZ and had assaulted the workers during their working hours amongst who were pregnant mothers.
He added that this sort of behaviour by the security forces cannot be accepted while saluting their brave actions which he claimed resulted in the temporary suspension of the proposed act.
