Rameswaram (TN), May 31 (PTI) A Sri Lankan refugee staying at the Mandapam camp here caused a flutter when he told security forces that he had buried weapons and explosives along the Ramanathapuram coast, but a search for the same failed to yield anything.
Intelligence sources told PTI that though the search, conducted yesterday, had failed, but they are also considering the possibilities that the refugee forgot about the exact location where he hid the explosives or they have been removed by some other group.
“Our officials took all the precautionary steps, including wearing protective gear for making a thorough search at the spot where he mentioned. But his claim turned out to be a hoax. It is not known whether he has forgotten the place where the weapons were buried. Or (if) the weapons have been removed by some other group,” an Intelligence source said.
They said the security forces had made elaborate arrangements seeking the experts from the Coastguard, Navy, Intelligence Bureau and Bomb Disposal squad to search the buried weapons and explosives.
They also refused to give details about the exact location where the search was conducted, saying they would have to probe further and maintain secrecy.
The sources said Sebastien, the refugee, had come to India in 1986 and had not registered with the government till 2006, when police found out that he was illegally staying and made him register with the Mandapam camp.
