The coastal security patrol mission of the Indian Coast
Guard arrested 16 Sri Lankan fishermen from three fishing boats on Monday.
Coast Guard officials said the three boats, Sea Horse Marine, Naduni-I and
Dushantha Putha -III, were found illegally fishing in Indian waters, 40
nautical mile east of Krishnapattinam coast.
The boats were carrying 1,300 kg of fish. The arrested fishermen were brought
to Chennai and will be handed over to the police. “This is the ninth
apprehension of Sri Lankan fishing vessels by the eastern Coast Guard group
this year. Considering the increased number of similar incidents, the Coast
Guard has launched dedicated operations with the help of aircraft to trace
intruders,” said a press release on Tuesday.
In 2011, the Coast Guard has seized 20 boats with 200 fishermen and 20,400 kg
fish in the eastern region, Times of India reports.
