Philip Kotler voted No. 1 in Management A-List of Academics

Business Educators, the first and only resource that specializes in facilitating direct connections between organizations and leading faculty from renowned universities has voted Prof. Philip Kotler as the No. 1 academic in its annual Management A-List of Academics for 2011. With less than a week to go, this world renowned guru of marketing, Kotler is expected to share his insights into effective marketing strategies at two forums to be held at the Waters Edge, Colombo.

The Management A-List of Academics features some of the most famous and distinguished professors in U.S. academia and is based on reported Google global web search interest during 2010.  The list comprises the most distinguished professors in American academia as chosen by Business Educators.  Professors are ranked according to the number of searches conducted for him or her during this period, relative to the total number of overall searches performed on the specific academic over time.

For the past two decades, Philip Kotler has been synonymous with marketing, having written many books that are widely used as the bibles to marketing. His book, Marketing Management: Application, Planning, Implementation and Control (1967), now in its twelfth edition, is the core text of marketing courses in most MBA programmes both here and overseas.

According to Kotler, value creation and raising the world’s living standards is vital to marketing and has always endeavored to expand discussions about marketing beyond production and service provision. Several of his publications refer to marketing of places, ideas and celebrities (High Visibility (1987). Kotler has also produced works for specialist audiences: Not-for-Profit organisations, religious congregations, even museums and believes that the most satisfying marketing job in the world is bringing “more health and education to people and making a real difference in their quality of life.” According to the Kotler edict, good companies will meet needs; great companies will create markets, and this includes areas such as marketing planning, market research and customer relationship management.

He adds that marketing has to be at the centre of business activity and must concentrate on customers. “Customer focus is critical in a world no longer marked by a shortage of goods but by a shortage of customers.” He has looked at companies like amazon.com  that initially seemed to possess great competitive advantage because it did not have huge physical assets and had to spend huge amounts on marketing to build its brand and retain customer loyalty.

Kotler also believes that “M marketing” using mobile devices like mobile ‘phones, will also grow in importance. Marketing managers will have to develop skills in Database management and data mining, Partnership relationship management, Telemarketing and call-centre management, Customization of offerings, services and messages and Experiential marketing . He also foresees marketing managers having access to “real time” information dashboards.

Philip Kotler’s visit to Sri Lanka is being facilitated by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, the national body of marketing in Sri Lanka.

Note: SLIM had in its previous release erroneously mentioned that Prof. Kotler invented the ‘4 Ps’ in marketing and the concept of social marketing. SLIM regrets the error. The concept of social marketing was invented jointly by Prof. Kotler and Gerald Zaltman
