Assigning of preferential numbers for LG polls completed

June 5, 2011   05:18 pm

The Election Secretariat announced that assigning preferential numbers for candidates of the Local Government election to be held for 67 bodies has been completed. Preparations are currently underway to hold the polls under the 2010 electoral register, Additional Elections Commissioner W.P. Sumanasiri said.

The electoral register of the year 2010 is scheduled to be certified on June 31.

Polls in several Local Government bodies were postponed due to the ICC World Cup being co-hosted by Sri Lanka, petitions regarding nomination rejections being filed in court and due to landmines still uncleared in certain parts.

Therefore the elections for these LG bodies, a Municipal Council, 7 Urban Councils and 59 Pradeshiya Sabhas, are to be held on July 23, as decided by the Elections Commissioner.
