The Government has decided to appoint Senior DIG N.K. Illangakoon as the next Inspector General of Police, the Defence Ministry told Ada Derana a short while ago. Following the resignation of former IGP Mahinda Balasuriya on June 1, Senior DIG N. K. Illangakoon was tipped to take over the reins.

Balasuriya tendered his retirement papers to President after the Katunayaka incident and the backlash which followed.
