100kgs of sea cucumber meant for SL seized in TN

Forest officials in Tamil Nadu today seized over 100 kgs of sea cucumber, an endangered marine species, and arrested one person who allegedly attempted to smuggle them to Sri Lanka from nearby Mandapam, Indian media reported.


The sea cucumbers totally weighing 105 kgs were found packed in 16 gunny bags, forest official Thilagaraj told reporters.


They arrested a 45-year old man who was in possession of the sea cucumbers and produced him before a magistrate court in Rameswaram which remanded him to 15 days judicial custody, he said.


Sea cucumbers, whose netting is prohibited under the Wildlife Protection Act, are in demand from South East Asian countries where it is used in preparing traditional medicines besides as a delicacy, PTI reported.
