TIRUCHI: The lawyers wing of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) should reach out to youth, particularly students explaining to them the need for fighting for the rights of the Tamils, said Vaiko, leader of the MDMK, here on Saturday.
Speaking at the state conference organised by the party’s advocates unit here, Mr. Vaiko said serious issues were plaguing the Tamils, some of them being the Mullaperiyar issue and the ‘genocide’ in Sri Lanka. Such issues were never witnessed before.
He said former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had failed to protect the rights of Tamil Nadu in the Mullaperiyar issue. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had taken a step of moving a resolution in the Assembly calling for economic sanctions on the Sri Lankan government.
He, however, said that Ms. Jayalalithaa should have also pressed the Centre to cancel all economic agreements with the Sri Lankan government.
Advocates affiliated to the party should explain to the college students the issues and challenges before the Tamils and the efforts being made by the MDMK. But this mission should not turn out to be a membership enrolment drive for the party.
“Adopt your professional strategy as guardians of law and justice. Do not approach students sporting party dhoties or flags,” he said. – (The Hindu)
