New IGP to assume duties on July 4

N.K. Ilangakoon will officially assume duties as the new IGP on July 04, according to Police Headquarters. He will be the 33rd Inspector General of Police of the democratic, socialist republic of Sri Lanka.

A native of Pinnawala, Balangoda Mr. Illangakoon was conferred a Bachelor of Education Degree in 1979. In 1982 he joined the Police Department as a Probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police and following training, was appointed as Assistant Superintendent of Police, In-charge of Kurunegala District.

A pioneer of the Police Special Task Force, established in 1983, he has served in Jaffna, Ampara and Batticaloa as an Area Commander and as the Coordinating Officer of Monaragala District. Also he was the first Deputy Commandant of the Special Task Force.

He was promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent of Police in 1994. Thereupon after functioning as the Officer In-charge of Anuradhapura and Gampaha Divisions respectively, Mr. N. K. Illangakoon was appointed as the Director Special Branch in 1999 and was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police.

He has served as Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province (North), Ministerial Security Division, Presidential Security Division and Crime Range and was promoted to the rank of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2006.

During his tenure of service he served twice as the Acting Inspector General of Police.
