Every possible step will be taken in a diplomatic manner to free Rizana Nafeek, the Lankan housemaid has been sentenced to death by a high court in Saudi Arabia, Justice Minister Rauf Hakeem stated.

He stated at a press conference today (July 02) that, according to the laws of that country the Saudi king does not have the authority to even grant the request made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently.

Rizana could only be pardoned by the parents of the victimized child, he added.

Therefore a request has been made to send a special delegation to Saudi Arabia to hold discussions with the infant’s parents and to seek clemency for the Lankan housemaid, the Minister revealed.
