In the past the police had to put aside fulfilling the duties of the police in order to take up arms and fight in the war. Which resulted in instances where police duties such as crime prevention, investigations and duties in court had appeared time-consuming, newly appointed IGP N.K. Illangakoon stated.
He made these statements after officially assuming duties as the 33rd Inspector General of Police at a ceremony held in police headquarters today (July 04).
However, he pointed out, as the war has now ended, the time has come to carry out the correct duty of protecting the law and peace.
The new IGP revealed that his first order of business will be to provide police officers with formal training on legal duties and maintaining public relations.
This training will be provided to new recruits as well as to high-ranking officers from OICs upwards, who have not received a formal training on standard police duties even though they have been engaged in wartime duties.
N.K. Illangakoon, who served twice as the Acting Inspector General of Police during his tenure, expressed that due to the actions of a very few police officers, the reputation of the entire police department has been tarnished.
“However there still are officers in the police who fulfill there duties with utmost responsibility.”
