Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera stated that out of all Sri Lankan nationals who traveled abroad for foreign employment between the years 2005 and 2010, approximately 6,873 had lost their jobs and returned to the island.
975 migrants had been injured in those foreign nations the Minister pointed out addressing parliament today (July 05), quoting statistics from 2005-2010.
He further stated that a total of 330 migrant workers had died in 2010 alone from suicides, motor accidents and natural causes. In the year 2009 that amount had been 333.
The minimum age limit for Lankan women to travel to foreign countries as housemaids will be increased to 30, from the current minimum age of 22, within the next three years.
The maximum age requirement for housemaids will also be increased from 50 to 41 years within three years. “In order to discourage Sri Lankan females from traveling abroad as housemaids.” he stressed.
