England held on to claim a tense 16-run triumph over Sri Lanka in the NatWest Series decider at Old Trafford.
Tim Bresnan (3-49) claimed three wickets as Sri Lanka slipped to 131-5 in pursuit of a victory target of 269 before Angelo Mathewsthreatened to script a famous turnaround.
But, with 17 needed off the final two overs, Jade Dernbach (2-49) removed Mathews (62) and Lasith Malinga with successive deliveries to seal the win.
England had earlier been grateful to half-centuries from Jonathan Trott (72) and Eoin Morgan (57) after they opted to bat first.
The hosts had looked on course for a much bigger total before Sri Lanka spinner Suraj Randiv ran through the middle order for figures of 5-42.
The result completes a fine come-from-behind 3-2 series win for England, who also won the fourth match at Trent Bridge by 10 wickets on Wednesday.
