UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake stated that a parliamentary select committee(PSC) needs to appoint in order to investigate into the low quality petrol which is alleged to have been imported to Sri Lanka.
He stressed that if such a committee is not appointed prior to the no confidence motion which is to be brought against petroleum minister Susil Premajayantha for the large scale irregularities as a result of low quality petrol, the government in turn will be able to defeat the said no confidence motion with a majority vote.
He further added that the defeat of a no confidence motion does not in any way ensure justice to the public who had to face much difficulty due to low quality petrol.
Attanayake further added that despite the fact that the Petroleum minister had announced the suspension of the payment for the low quality petrol which had been imported this decision in itself was questionable.
He stated that this is due to the fact that payment for all fuel imported to Sri Lanka is done through letters of credit. Hence once the shipment reaches the port the transaction itself is completed and thus the payment has already been made despite the minister’s announcement.
