Around 16 billion rupees in losses was forecasted for the Ceylon Electricity Board within this financial year but due to the recent power shortage the losses could be more, Power and Energy Minister, Patali Champika Ranawaka says.

The Minister reaffirmed that they were not power cuts and only a restriction of the power supply. They were not announced beforehand because the outage does not last long, he expressed during a press conference held today (July 12).

He assured that it would not happen in future and that if power cuts were necessary public announcements will be made in advance.

However, he pointed out, sudden power outage could occur more than a thousand times a day as a result of various issues such as trees falling, the work of animals and transformer related issues.

The Minister also urged the public to use electricity with care within the peak hours 6.30pm – 9.30pm.

“No matter who draws cartoons or slings mud power cuts will not occur again.” he emphasized.
