Prisons Dept. requests to speed up legal procedures of inmates

The Prisons Department has requested from the Attorney General’s Department to hasten the legal procedures regarding the inmates arrested and detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Commissioner General of Prisons Major General V.R. De Silva states that the Attorney General’s Department has also been informed of the hunger strike launched by a group of inmates in the Vavuniya Prison.
Four inmates of the Vavuniya Prison detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act had initially commenced the hunger strike which was yesterday (July 16) joined by around 30 more prisoners.
The prisoners demand that the charges against them be investigated hastily or that they be released.
The demands of these prisoners cannot be met by the Department of Prisons as the Attorney General’s Department has to take necessary steps in this regard, Major General V.R. De Silva affirmed.
