LG polls end ‘peacefully’ - EC; Avg. voting 55%

The Local Government polls for 65 institutions which was held today (July 23) ended at 4pm. Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya says today’s polls have been peaceful without any major incidents being reported.  

Only several minor incidents of election violation were reported, according to him. “The voter turnout compared to previous elections was at a normal level.”

People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) stated that it had received 56 reports regarding incidents of violations of election laws within the time period allocated for voting.

However there were no major incidents amongst these, PAFFREL executive director Rohana Hettiarachchi said.

He also said that the average voter turnout in today’s polls was between 50-60 percent.

Campaign for Free & Fair Election (CaFFE) says that the percentage of voter turnout was at 55 and that the highest percentage of votes was reported from the Monaragala District.

According to Government Agent Paththinathan the voter turnout in Mullaithivu today was 65 percent.

Meanwhile Kilinochchi District Secretary Rupavathi Ketheeswaran confirmed that 75 percent had caste their votes in the polls for the Punakar Pradeshiya Sabha.

2, 570, 542 voters had qualified for voting today while a total of 5688 candidates, representing 20 political parties and 72 independent groups, had contested in the election.

Ada Derana correspondents confirmed that ballot boxes are currently being transported from polling stations to counting centers.
