Thirty Indian fishermen were injured when they were assaulted allegedly by Sri Lankan Naval personnel in the high seas off the coast here on Thursday, Indian police reportedly told the Hindu newspaper.
The fishermen alleged that the Lankan Naval men, who came in seven boats, whipped them with a rope, and took away their catch and GPS equipment, among others, early Thursday morning.
When contacted by Ada Derana Sri Lanka Navy Spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya completely denied the claim adding that the Navy today rescued an Indian trawler stranded at Delft island. He added that the Navy had provided food and assistance to repair the boat.
The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka was informed and asked to take the necessary measure, he added.
