KENDRAPADA: Eleven Sri Lankan fishermen were arrested off the Paradip coast on Thursday for allegedly straying into Indian waters. “This is the second such incident in four days. Recently, 13 foreign fisheremen were caught near Paradip,” officer of marine police station in Paradip T Patel said.
“Two boats and five quintals of fish were seized from the Sri Lankan fishermen caught 160 nautical miles from Paradip,” he said.
Coast Guard personnel surrounded the Sri Lankan fishermen after they spotted the incursion. The Sri Lankan fishermen claimed to have drifted into Indian waters due to rough weather. The arrested men along with their boats were handed over to the marine police in Paradip on Thursday, according to Indian media.
On Monday, the Coast Guard nabbed 13 suspected Sri Lanka fishermen and seized three deep sea fishing vessels on charges of illegally fishing in Indian waters. Police officials informed the district administration about the arrest of foreign nationals. It in turn informed the home department, the police officer said.
“The foreign fishermen often enter Indian waters for fishing. Last year, 19 fishermen from Burma had been arrested in the sea near Paradip. After the Mumbai attack, the Coast Guards and police of Paradip are on high alert,” the police officer.
Two years ago, the Coast Guard had arrested six Lanka fishermen and seized a deep sea fishing vessel, about 135 nautical miles from Paradip, reports The Times of India.
