MARKSS Healthcare supports Kinniya Hospital

MARKSS Healthcare (MARKSS HLC) one of the fastest growing pharmaceutical companies in Sri Lanka, under its flagship sustainability initiative, “Markss Wellness Campaign”, conducted a workshop on the topic “The importance of calcium for pregnant mothers”for medical officers of Kinniya Hospital. 

Dr. S. Jeyakumar - Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist delivered the key note speech at the event.

Dr. S. Mahakalanda, Director Medical MARKSS Healthcare commented, “We at MARKSS are privileged to have supported Kinniya Hospital in this effort. The hospital was destroyed by the Tsunami in 2004 and was rebuilt, which is a special story. The doctors are dedicated and committed to provide a high class service to the community. The District Medical Officers, Dr Sameen’s charismatic leadership was a clear factor in making this event a success. The commitment and the enthusiasm of Dr. S. Jeyakumar and Dr. Saileshwaran, in making today’s knowledge sharing session is commendable”. 

He reiterated the importance of maintaining optimal level of calcium for the pregnant mothers, as a paramount component of diet that aids bone and teeth mineralization, maintaining structural density of bones and teeth, muscle contraction, blood clotting and many other important functions such as nerve conduction. He added, “The calcium requirement during pregnancy increases by about 20% than usual. Despite the fact that calcium is frequently available in our environment, calcium deficiency is a common situation faced by many pregnant mothers. Promoting the intake of calcium rich foods for pregnant mothers, such as fish, milk etc. during this period is vital. However in situations where such practices are not easy, supplementation becomes a requirement”. He further added that 1000mg to 1500mg of calcium is required in supplementation and the guidance of a qualified medical practitioner is essential in this process.

The Kinniya hospital maintains a LSCS (Lower Section Cesarean Section) average below 10% of total deliveries performed in the hospital. Dr. A.H. Sameen, District Medical Officer of the hospital who was also present at the workshop commended the efforts of his staff for their hard work and dedication.He also added that the hospital currently serves a population of over 85000 in and around Kinniya, in the Trincomalee District.
