Lankan accent exposes trio with forged passports

Three Sri Lankans were deported back to Ahmedabad international airport from Dubai on charges of travelling on forged passports. The incident is said to have unearthed a well-organised human trafficking racket active in Tamilnadu.

The deportation of the trio including a woman carrier has stunned immigration officials at Ahmedabad airport. The special branch looks into the immigration related matters in the city, Indian media reported.

According to the joint commissioner of police, Special Branch, Shamsher Singh the trio was busted by the Dubai immigration officials in quite a dramatic way.

“Technically, there was nothing wrong in the passport. But the Dubai immigration officials suspected the trio. Since they are Tamils the officials called their Tamil officer to question them. It was then the official found that the accent of two of them matched from what Sri Lankan Tamils speak. During interrogation the trio broke down and revealed their identity,” said Singh.

The trio, whose original names are Chitra Devi Manoharan, Subhash Karan Seladurai Pillai and Wamathelan Janagan, were traveling in fake identities of Moyuddin Subedabegam, Bobalan Shankar and Gopal Ramna, respectively. The woman is a resident of Tiruchirapalli, while the two passengers are Sri Lankan nationals but were living in Chennai in recent past. The passports are said to have been issued in Coimbatore and Chennai.

“It has been found that documents used in the passports belong to other people, however, the photos have been changed. The surprising part in this act is that the photos have also been verified by the local Tiruchirapalli police. We are sure that this all happened because of the involvement of the local police,” Singh told DNA.

The police said that the woman has allegedly been working as a carrier and had traveled thrice on the same passport from Ahmedabad airport to Paris. She has also traveled with her original name as Chitra Devi from city airport in recent past.

Police said that three agents have also been identified as part of a well-organised human trafficking racket. They have been identified Jena from Chennai, Mayuran from London and one Venkatesh who is originally from Chennai but lives in Mumbai, reports India’s Daily News & Analysis (DNA).
