A statement issued by the Ceylon Electricity Board says that the Trade Union action of the Electricity Board employees has gone beyond its strike level to some groups indulging in sabotage activities.

It says that on the night of 3rd August, 5 powerful fuses of a transformer in the Hapugala Area in Kegalle has been removed forcing the people to be in the dark the whole night.  The Electricity Board says that removal of these fuses could not be done by an ordinary person and it has been done by a person with technical knowledge, Govt. According to the Government Information Department, Police have informed that the people of the Hapugala area accuse a leading JVPer working in the Electricity Board as responsible for the removal of the fuses and denying them electricity.
