BJP activists arrested during anti-Lankan protest

Several volunteers and members of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) including National Secretary Muralidhar Rao and state unit President Pon Radhakrishnan were arrested today (August 7) by Indian Coast Guard during their agitation at Rameswaram condemning the attacks on Indian fishermen allegedly by Lankan Navy.
The group had been arrested when they had attempted to board their boats to engage in the protest in the sea coast of Rameswaram and along the maritime boarder, Indian media reported.
The BJP was to stage the to protest condemn the “indifference” of the Central government to the recurring attacks on Indian fishermen and demand immediate steps to protect the fishermen and help them fish in the sea peacefully, Radhakrishnan had told reporters.
BJP geared for the protest dotting the thoroughfares of the island with party flags and festoons. Heavy police security had been posted in and around the town.
The arrested BJP members and volunteers were released by authorities afterwards, reports Indian media.
