Ganja, tobacco meant for Lanka seized, 6 held

Police foiled a bid to smuggle narcotic substances to Sri Lanka today (Aug 8) by arresting six people, including one Sri Lankan national, and seizing 40 kg of ganja and five bundles of tobacco at Thangatchimadam, a village in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.
Police said during a routine vehicle check at a check post near St. Theresal Church at Thangatchimadam coastal hamlet, the police intercepted an Omni van coming from Tiruchirapalli. During verification, police found 20 bundles of ganja weighing 40 kg and five bundles of tobacco kept in the van, Indian media reported.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the gang attempted to smuggle the narcotic substances to Sri Lanka through a clandestine boat. In addition the police seized 100,000 Indian rupees cash from the gang while the van was impounded.
Six occupants of the van, namely Sundararajan (58), a Sri Lankan national, Sethu (56), Nova Thomas (34), driver of the van, Saravanan (28), Braiton (32) and Viji (30) were arrested. Further investigations were on, reports UNI.
