Uthayan News Editor attack: main suspect arrested

The main suspect in the attack on the News Editor of Uthayan newspaper has been taken into police custody today (August 15) morning, Northern Province Senior DIG Gamini Silva confirmed.
He stated that a special police team, as instructed by him, was deployed from Jaffna to apprehend the suspect while at the Kalubowila Hospital in Colombo.
Initial investigations indicated that the individual was a notorious criminal responsible for several criminal acts in the Jaffna area, the DIG revealed.
The suspect had been injured and was subsequently admitted to the Jaffna Hospital, following a clash with a group in the area. However, he had later fled that hospital and admitted himself into the Kalubowila Hospital, Gamini Silva stated.
Uthayan News Editor, G. Kuganathan, was assaulted by an unidentified group and hospitalized on July 29. He had been clubbed on the back of the head with a steel pole while returning home from work.
President Rajapaksa had instructed the IGP to conduct a full scale investigation while the report on the incident was handed over to the President on August 03.
According to Senior DIG Gamini Silva another suspect involved in the incident is yet to be arrested and that investigations are still in progress.
