If there are those who say that the UNP voter base has not fallen then they are mentally unsound, UNP Western Provincial Councillor, Shiral Lakthilaka stated at a press conference today (August 15).

The press conference was held in Colombo by a group of Provincial Councillors in response to a previously held press briefing in which a group of UNP Provincial Council Opposition members had stated that there was no need for a change in the party leadership.

Mr. Lakthilaka challenged the Provincial Council opposition leaders to reveal those who were against a change in the UNP leadership stating that even though there is a call to solve some of the problems of the UNP Working Committee, it consists entirely of those appointed by UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.

He claimed that Karu Jayasuriya should be made the party Leader because he has won the hearts of the majority and is capable of challenging President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Southern Provincial Councillor, Maithri Gunaratne stated that this was not an effort to chase Ranil from the party but to give way to new leadership.

Meanwhile, North Central Provincial Councillor Rohana Gamage added that the party conflict should be solved respectfully.
