Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe will continue as the leader of the United National Party in the future, MP Tissa Attanayake said. Speaking to media following the UNP Working Committee meeting today he stated that there had been no challenge towards Wickramasinghe’s leadership.

The UNP General Secretary added that once the term of Ranil Wickramasinghe has been completed new leadership can step forward and that the final decision regarding the party leadership will be made by the Working Committee.

Responding to a question by a reporter outside the party headquarters Sirikotha, as to whether UNP Co-deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya had agreed to the decision, he said that Mr. Jayasuriya informed the Working Committee he does not wish to challenge Ranil as his only desire is to unite the party.

We have decided to seek an explanation from UNP Parliamentarian Rosie Senanayake regarding the statement made by her claiming that the Working Committee was illegal and it will be decided afterwards as to whether action will be taken against her, Attanayake revealed.

He also emphasized that starting from today the law under the party constitution will be strictly implemented against those who violate discipline within the party. “This concerns all in general.”
