The fierce competition amongst bus operators is one of the reasons for the increasing in roadside accidents, the National Transport Commission (NTC) stated.

Around 2500 people are killed each year due to roadside accidents while around 50 of them are those who fall from the footboards in buses, Director of the NTC, Vipula Hewa Walimuni said.

These comments were made at a special discussion held in the Sabaragamuwa Province regarding a joint timetable for Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and private buses.

Speaking at the event, Secretary of the Ministry of Private Transport Services, Victor Samaraweera said that no driving licenses will be issued through the NTC unless in a special situation.
