Nine persons who were arrested including two Thirukkovil Provincial Council members of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) were released after preliminary investigations were completed, the Thirukkovil Police stated.

The nine suspects have been ordered to present themselves at courts on August 25, a Senior Police official revealed.

A tense situation broke out between police and a crowd of people in Thirukkovil last Friday which resulted in the police being pelted with stones and two persons being injured by police gunfire.

The next day, the people of Thirukkovil protested by raising black flags and closing all the shops in the area while burning tires on the streets to show their displeasure at the police.

Nine persons were taken into custody in connection with the incident including one of the gunshot victims who was the TNA Provincial Councillor, Baranitharan. The other arrested PC member was Amitharlingam Chandrakumar.
