The World Humanitarian Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the achievements of the past including the broad partnerships in support of Sri Lankan national humanitarian efforts, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sri Lanka said in a statement.
Making a statement ahead of the World Humanitarian Day which will be celebrated tomorrow (August 19), the Humanitarian Coordinator spoke of the key milestones in the humanitarian effort in Sri Lanka including the raising of US $24 million in addition to the government assistance for over 1.2 million flood victims.
The statement also mentioned the humanitarian assistance provided to the conflict affected North where the immediate needs of close upon 300,000 IDPs were provided for. Humanitarian partners also worked alongside the government to support a dignified return process.
It further stated that the UN will increasingly look for opportunities to support the government in promoting reconciliation which it believes is the key to ensuring lasting and durable peace.
