18 remanded for obstructing policemen

Eighteen suspects, produced before the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court yesterday, were ordered remanded in custody for allegedly obstructing two police officers.
The two officers, attached to the Pavakkudichena police station, had been obstructed by group of residents near the Thandiadi Hospital while they had been traveling to the station after duty yesterday, STF said.
Several personnel of the Special Task Force (STF) who had arrived at the scene had then dispersed the crowd and had arrested 18 persons who possessed weapons such as steel rods, clubs and knives.
The STF stated that the apprehended suspects were handed over to the Vavunativu police station afterwards.
The Batticaloa Magistrate ordered that the 18 wounded suspects be hospitalized and treated before they are placed in remand custody. The group of indivualds are currently receiving medical treatment at the Batticaloa Hospital.
