A group of residents in the Kalpitiya area have attacked and wounded a police constable, mistaking him for a “grease devil”.

The policeman, attached to the Kalpitiya Police and assigned to duty at an examination center in the area, had reportedly been attacked when he had visited a store to purchase mosquito coils last night.

The constable had been assaulted by the overcautious residents when he had knocked on the door of the store, which was closed at the time.

The wounded police constable has been admitted to the Puttalam Hospital while the Kalpitiya Police is conducting further investigation regarding the incident.
