The British Tamil Forum (BTF)’s Humanitarian Advocacy Director Nathan Pathmanathan today urged the BJP to intervene in the alleged ‘killing’ of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Mr Nathan along with BJP Convenor, Overseas Affairs Vijay Jolly met Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and apprised her of the current ground situation in Sri Lanka after the decimation of LTTE.
The Tamil leader urged Ms Swaraj to cancel her proposed Sri Lanka tour next month and said the BJP should force the Congress-led UPA government to take action to “halt the assault on the Tamil people and their religious freedom by the Sri Lankan government.”
Ms Swaraj assured him to raise the issue in Parliament.
She also reiterated BJP’s commitment for the protection of human rights of Tamils.
Mr Nathan alleged that the repression by Sri Lankan armed forces is continuing on the false pretext of eliminating the armed movement of LTTE.
He alleged that Tamils, the majority, of whom are Hindus, in Sri Lanka are systematically targeted.
Mr Nathan said the United Nations Panel Expert Report of March 31 has stated that there is credible evidence for an investigation for “war crimes and crimes against humanity” in Sri Lanka. --UNI
