President of Lanka Private Bus Owners Association Gemunu Wijeratne addressing a press conference today stated that though legislation was passed outlawing begging on buses it has not been fully put into effect. He further added that bus driver and conductors were afraid of beggars who board buses.
He further narrated an incident where a driver had asked a female beggar not to get into the bus to which she had reacted by shouting that it was due to the fact that she refused to sleep with the driver last night the driver is preventing her from begging.
Gemunu claimed that due to such incidents drivers and conductors have an aversion when dealing with beggars. He stated that on numerous occasions he had in writing brought this to the attention of the IGP to ensure that the legislation is practiced fully.
