Only Food and Beverage Manufacturing Company in Country to be Honoured at Sri Lanka’s Main Environmental Awards

Nestlé Lanka, the Country’s leading Nutrition, Health and Wellness Company, was awarded Silver by the Minister of Environment, Honourable Anura P. Yapa at the National Green Awards 2011 held recently.

A first time applicant for the awards this year, the Company was the only Food and Beverage manufacturer in Sri Lanka to be honoured at the Country’s main environmental awards event.

“We at Nestlé are very excited to be honoured at the National Green Awards” said Mr. Alois Hofbauer, Managing Director for Nestlé Lanka PLC “we are proud to be recognized by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) for environmentally friendly operations; it is a reflection of our successful ambition to Create Shared Value with the communities we touch at every step of our operations.”

‘Creating Shared Value’ (CSV) is a fundamental part of Nestlé’s business strategy, which goes beyond Corporate Social Responsibility. CSV is ingrained in every aspect of the Nestlé business, which is reflected in the Nestlé state-of-the-art Kurunegala factory and its world class initiatives to conserve the environment. The Nestlé factory’s model approach to minimizing the impact of its operations in the environment are lauded by many businesses, residents and schools surrounding the factory.

“Nestlé Lanka is very much aware of its dependence on a sustainable environment that can provide the high quality resources we need to deliver on our promise of ‘Good food, Good life’” said Mr. Hofbauer. “As the CEA rightfully stated, incorporating the ‘green idea’ in our lives, work and business is no longer a choice but a  need. I certainly agree that the time will come when the green value of a brand will define the potential of a brand to do well in a competitive environment. I’d like to thank the Ministry of Environment and the CEA for recognizing our efforts in this regard and reiterate Nestlé Lanka’s ongoing commitment to the practice of sustainable development.”

The National Green Awards is organized by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) of Sri Lanka to recognize the environmental services rendered by organizations in the country and also to encourage local companies to be more environmentally active.

The 2011 awards was held under the patronage of His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapakse, and saw members from business community and over 300 institutions participate in the competition this year.
