Charity allowance to be increased

The government is currently providing 207, 301 seniors of low income families with a monthly charity allowance between Rs.100-300, according to Minister of Social Services Felix Perera.

Cabinet approval has been received to increase that allowance to an amount between Rs.500 and Rs.1, 000, he told parliament today (August 26) in response to an inquiry by UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara.

Accordingly appropriate steps will be taken in this regard in the next budget proposal, the Minister Perera expressed.

He also pointed out that the government would have to spend close to Rs.3 billion annually if the charity allowance is increase to the said amount.
