No Sri Lankans are affected by Hurricane Irene, a massive and deadly storm currently traveling through the East Coast in America, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington D.C. confirmed today (August 28).
A 24-hour hotline has been established on 0012023520355 at the Embassy in Washington DC for the Lankans living in the East Coast, an Embassy Spokesman told Ada Derana.
The hotline has been established under the instructions of Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the US Jaliya Wickramasuriya.
At least six people have been killed in North Carolina, Virginia and Florida while over two million people have been evacuated as hurricane Irene is pummelling the US east coast after making landfall in North Carolina, foreign media reported.
The 500-mile wide storm, with winds of around 80mph (129km/h), is moving slowly northwards. New York and other large cities are said to be in its predicted path.
